Llangollen

Spent last night being battered about by the stormy winds.  Fortunately, I had double-staked the upwind mooring which held throughout the night.  Today we made it to Llangollen.  Been here before many years ago, but I don’t remember it or recognise the canal.  A lot of work has been done since then, and we are currently moored up in a well equipped basin – built since we were last here.  The last few miles of the canal are hard going as it is very narrow in places and there is a substantial current against you – this is basically the header for the many miles of canal from here on down to the Shropshire canal.

To get here, we had to cross the Pontcysyllte aqueduct.  It is over 300 metres long and 38 metres above the valley below.  One side is completely open with just the metal of the trough holding the water and then a sheer drop.  Not being very good with heights, I kept to the other side of the boat.  It was also very windy.

Had a look around the town today.  The river is very popular for canoeing as there are a lot of rapids:
