Mumbles Lifeboat Launch

Fortunately, not as the result of an emergency, but as part of a Christmas event. On Sunday, 22nd December, The Mumbles Lifeboat Station held a Carol Concert to help raise funds. It featured the first performance by The Mumbles Lifeboat Choir (only formed three weeks previously and thought to be the first RNLI Choir). The climax was a demonstration launch of the Lifeboat.

The Mumbles Lifeboat has had tragedy in the past. In 1947 eight of their crew, along with the crew of the SS Samptampa, were lost when the Lifeboat is thought to have been overwhelmed by a freak wave. The crew now have to wear full dry suits when at sea and have to be able to swim well in order to qualify as a Lifeboatman. They also have to live within two miles of the Lifeboat station.

The current lifeboat is a self-righting Tamar Class, 16 metres long – slightly shorter, but much wider and more powerful than Brandy Pad.

A very Merry Christmas to all our followers.
