We recently made the crossing from the Leeds and Liverpool canal at Tarleton to the Lancaster canal at Preston. This is a serious bit of cruising as it involves tidal rivers and estuary waters.
Wind is one of the main factors in this passage and as it has been rather breezy in this part of the world of late, we were unsure we would be allowed to make the journey (the Canal and River Trust have strict rules for allowing you to do it.) Fortunately the wind was just the top end of allowable, so we set off.
Amongst other things we are advised to have flares onboard, in case of breakdown. My nerves were on edge since we have to run the engine flat out to go against the tide and make progress down the River Douglas. Something we haven’t really had to do till now. Once we turned onto the Ribble, we started running with the tide and our speed went right up to 7.5 mph. We turned into the Ribble Link just as the tide was turning.
So, here is a video of our journey. As the total time taken was around 6 hours, I have speeded most of it up by 10 times. I think you will be able to tell where. It is also quite long at nearly 7 minutes. You may prefer to download it:
Hi, and thanks for the video. We were on Narrowboat Lizzie-Jean in Tarleton Lock with you (and glimpsed again later in the video). What an exciting trip it was! Since then we’ve been up to Tewitfield, and found a permanent mooring on the Lancy at Garstang so this is now home for us and the boat. Good luck going back!
Good to hear from you guys and glad to hear you have sorted out your mooring. We are currently in Glasson. Well worth a visit when you get a chance. Head for the visitors moorings to the left of the lock and there is a great pub “The Dalton Arms” a short walk away.
Excellent navigating ! Well done,
I was imagining Helen waterskiing behind during the speeded up bits !
Keep boating.
Great footage. Hope the weather improved!
Brilliant video!
Glad you made it.
