Banana moorings and their appeel…

We moored up at Rugby on Sunday and will be meeting with our friends Rob and Susan on Monday. Rugby council (presumably) have supplied loads of new mooring rings along the canal, largely because they have closed off the moorings that used to be available behind the new, shiny “Elliott Fields” (how appropriate) shopping plaza.

Unfortunately, most of them are on a bend. This means that with a 58 foot boat, one or other end is likely to stick out. A bit of a problem as the canal is quite narrow at this point and there are short term moorings on the other side. Do you have the stern out and risk a big gap between the bank and the boat (plenty of opportunity to fall in), or the bow out, running the risk of being hit by other boats?

Well, in fact we split the difference, which among other things involves moving our bottle fenders towards the centre of the boat to cushion us from the solid bank:

Stern of boat set out from bank

Stern slightly out

Bow out from bank
