We’ve been on the Fossdyke Navigation and river Witham for the last week or so. The navigation was dug by the Romans and true to form is remarkably straight. It is also very lovely:
We visited Lincoln and then on down to Boston – probably the most Eastern point we can get to as we cannot access the Norfolk Broads. The navigation and river are alive with wildlife – Ducks, Mute and Whooper Swans, Canada Geese, Egyptian Geese, Greylag Geese, Cormorants, Great Crested and Little Grebes, Kingfishers, Herons, Chaffinches, Chiffchaffs, Swallows, Buzzards, Kestrels, Pied and Grey Wagtails, Goldfinches, Starlings, Moorhens, Coots, Gulls galore and loads of fish, which explains the cormorants at least.
Sadly, we haven’t time on this occasion to visit the drains, which are exactly what the name implies – long, man made channels to drain the fens but are navigable, albeit rather like travelling in ditches. We will, however, return in the future and spend more time here. We can really recommend this navigation to any boaters feeling brave enough to take on the Tidal Trent.
As ever, click on the images for bigger versions.
We also found this little chap while doing a Geocache at Fiskerton Fen Nature Reserve.
